Case For: The Savage Dragon
Premise: A near-invincible "freak," found under mysterious circumstances, becomes a police officer in Chicago and begins a one-man war against other criminal freaks.
Creator/Owner: Erik Larson Think: NYPD Blue with Spider-Man-level villians with a splash of The Venture Brothers Genre: Superhero Action/Comedy Target: Young adult males 18 - 30 Forget about the 26-episode USA Network adaptation. Mr. Larson would appreciate if you do. When the series premiered in the mid-90s, fans of the original comics were disappointed to see the characters so saccharine and completely out of character, not to mention noticing a lot of characters in the comics missing in the series, not unlike another teen-oriented comic-turned-kid-friendly franchise, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Sure, Dragon was a badass in the kid-friendly version of the teen-oriented comic, but he was probably the only guy in character throughout the whole series. In the age of Adult Swim, the Dragon deserves another turn on the animation stage. You have a strong stable of characters in this series, including Mighty Man (who has the secret identity of a female nurse), Star (an interesting Spider-Man-like character with a very original twist), Freak Force, The Vicious Circle, and countless others. Insert hard-hitting action with the same comedic overtones seen in shows like Sealab 2021 and Venture Brothers with just a pinch of the naughtiness of Lupin III combined with over the top scenarios you'll never find on other cartoons. And if the creators of the series get stuck for an idea, they could easily look to the comics for plots. America needs a fun, adult action series with more action than laughs.
